Professor Chris Rowley, who is the UK President of the World Association for Hallyu Studies, received a conference fund from the Academy of Korean Studies to host the 8th World Congress for Hallyu in September 2020. The congress invites presenters of research results and papers from all over the world who are going to present papers on Hallyu, or the Korean pop culture, with a focus on the pop culture industries. The topic of the conference ranges from pop culture industries in Asia Pacific, to various areas of cultural studies with a focus on business and management.
The World Association for Hallyu Studies, whose president is Professor Ingyu Oh at Kansai Gaidai University, Japan, has organized world congresses in the last seven consecutive years. With its first inaugural congress held at Korea University (2013), Seoul, it hosted six other congresses in Buenos Aires (2014), Dubai (2015), Oxford (2016), Seoul (2017), Osaka (2018), and Jerusalem (2019). The 8th congress will be held at Oxford again for its second time, highlighting the strength of the UK and Oxford in their research in the area of business management, creative industries, Asian Studies, and cultural studies.
With renowned scholars as speakers and presenters, Kellogg College welcome all interested scholars and students of pop culture, cultural industries, and East Asia to the congress.

Trois artistes coréennes, trois univers à découvrir : les Écritures blanches de Kim Myoung Nam, les Couleurs radieuses de Bang Hai Ja, les Temps perdus ou les murailles de riz de Han Myung-Ok. Tous naissent de processus créatifs qui accordent une attention particulière à la valeur du temps et du geste, au respect de matières essentielles et à une forme de spiritualité. Okyang Chae-Duporge, historienne de l’art coréen, et Dauphine Scalbert, céramiste formée en Corée, permettront quant à elle d’éclairer les sources du goût pour la simplicité et la perfection du geste dans l’esthétique coréenne.

In this talk, I assess the impact of the international grain trade on local markets in Ulsan, southeastern Korea, following the opening of Korean ports in 1876. While previous studies have examined the international rice trade as an extension of Japanese imperialism in northeast Asia, little is known about how ordinary producers experienced and understood these changes within the context of their local economic activity. Drawing from the diary of Sim Wŏn’gwŏn (1850-1933), a local farmer, I examine how Sim used his diary to develop an economic worldview based on cyclical, seasonal price changes. While this enabled Sim to anticipate some fluctuations in weather and harvest patterns, the international rice trade posed a challenge as prices in local markets began to reflect events beyond Sim’s sphere of information. Ultimately, uneven access to knowledge shaped Sim’s participation in international trade, which cannot be understood without reference to Sim’s own understanding of the economy.
