« Urban ideology, Gangnam-ization of Korean urban development and the hegemony of Korean capitalism »

le 15 mars 2019 de 10h – 12h
à la Maison de l’Asie / Salle de cours RdCh

22 Avenue du Président Wilson Paris 75016

This lecture addresses the ways in which a dominant discursive and imaginary representation of what the urban should be about has shaped the forms of urban development in South Korea. In particular, it argues that 1) the ways in which the developmental processes and life style of Gangnam, the first modern new town in Korea, have been discursively represented have greatly influenced the formation of dominant discursive and imaginary representation of what the urban should be about in Korea, thereby resulting in the construction of a certain urban ideology, and 2) the urban ideology, constructed through certain discursive representations of Gangnam, has greatly influenced the ways in which the Korean middle class has desired, aspired and consumed particular forms of urban space, thereby resulting in the spatial replication of the Gangnam-like urban forms throughout the country.

About the workshop:

Korean Independence Movement and Europe: Comparing “small and weak” nations independence movements after the First World War

To be held in June 26-27, 2019 in Paris

This workshop aims to share and exchange perspectives between East Asian and European scholars about the “small and weak” nations issue and the Korean independence movement in Europe at the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Paris Peace Conference.

First, we intend to focus on the Korean Independence movement in Europe with subjects such as:
(1) the circumstances and process of sending delegates to the Paris Peace Conference, (2) the Korean Paris delegation and the activities of Hwang Ki-Whan, (3) the Association of Koreans in France and the role of Hong Che-Ha, (4) the French people who have supported the Korean independence movement, and (5) the English people who helped the Korean independence movement, etc..

Secondly, we would like to deal with comparisons with other non-Korean nations cases:
(1) the “small and weak” nations in the Paris peace Conference, (2) the Asian solidarity between Koreans, Chinese and Vietnamese, (3) the Estonian independence movement and Korea, and (4) the Irish independence movement and Korea, and (5) the other European independence movements.

We wish to invite several scholars from Korea, France and other European countries to attend the conference as specialist of the field and to present a paper.

The application deadline is March 25, 2019.

If you are interested in presenting a paper during this workshop, please send us an abstract of about 300 words with additional bibliography references in English, Korean or French.
If you would like to participate as a specialist in one of the two round-tables about “the archives and the potentiality to discover new documents related to the Korean independence movement in Europe” or “Comparing the Korean independence movement and other independence movements”, please contact us.

« Special zones and territorialities of East Asian developmental states »

le 11 mars de 17 h à 19 h
EHESS / salle AS1_23

54 Boulevard Raspail 75006 Paris

This lecture aims to provide a conceptual framework to see the special zones in East Asia in relation to the territoriality of the state. In particular, I try to theorize the special zones in relation to the dialectics of the contradictory relations between mobility and fixity inherent in the territoriality of the modern nation state. In addition, it will be suggested to see special zones as an essential part of the spatiality of the East Asian developmental states, given the spatio-temporal contexts of the East Asian capitalist development. On the basis of these theoretical discussions, I will divide the special zones that have been developed in East Asia since the 1960s into 3 different types: 1) special zones in transition economies, 2) developmentalist special zones, 3) neo-liberal special zones.

Bae-Gyoon Park is a Professor of Geography in the College of Education at Seoul National University in Korea, and the director of Center for Asian Cities (CAC) at Seoul National University Asia Center. He will take part of the Visting Professors Program designed by EHESS and is invited by Valérie Gelezeau (Chine, Corée, Japon – CCJ). His recent research focuses on geo-political economies of East Asian border regions and (post) developmental urbanism in East Asia. He is an editor of Locating Neoliberalism in East Asia (Blackwell 2012) and several Korean-written books. He has also published papers in International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Critical Sociology, Political Geography, Economic Geographyand Critical Asian Studies.
